Meditation

This small booklet contains 13 talks by the Venerable Ajahn Lee on meditation for beginners. It has been translated from Thai by the Venerable Thanissaro Bhikkhu of Dhamma Talks, and to quote his page directly:

Starting Out Small: A Collection of Talks for Beginning Meditators, by Ajaan Lee Dhammadharo. (revised & expanded September 5, 2016) In this collection of talks Ajaan Lee covers the sorts of questions that occur to people new to meditation—Why meditate? How should I meditate? And why in that particular way?—and in his own style he provided not only straightforward answers to these questions but also vivid analogies.

Earlier in 2016 this book was expanded with two new talks that had never been published before—“Merit” and “On Target”—along with complete translations of the talks “The Art of Letting Go” and “At the Tip of Your Nose.”

With the newest edition, Starting Out Small now includes another section of newly translated Dhamma talks, featuring one of Ajaan Lee’s longest recorded sermons, “Recollection of Virtue.”

This is an excellent guide for the beginning meditator. Ajahn Lee is lucid and to the point. I highly recommend this text. It will be made available in the eLibrary per usual.

It is released under a http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/ license and thus can be distributed so long as it is not sold.

The Noble Eightfold Path

The Noble Eightfold Path

Thanissaro Bhikkhu has written a fairly hefty tome called ‘On The Path’ regarding the Noble Eightfold Path. I am reading it at the moment and it is certainly worth the time and investment for your practice. I offer it here as a service to all and trust that it will serve your practice as it is so doing with mine.

I have, as usual, placed it in the eLibrary. It is covered by its own Creative Commons License.

Ajahn Chah

A Taste of Freedom refers to a book/pamphlet that has been made available by Buddha.net that is a collection of talks by the Venerable Ajahn Chah first published in 1980.

A Taste of Freedom - Ajahn Chah

The talks were recorded on a simple cassette tape recorder under less than ideal conditions, so the rendering of the talks has taken some non-insignificant effort on the part of the translators. However, that the talks given by Ajahn Chah exist is of immense benefit and due appreciation should be given to those diligent enough to offer electronic or print editions of these messages.

The Venerable Ajahn Chah

Ajahn Chah, as I have said before, was a pillar of the Thai Forest Tradition, and responsible for that traditions dissemination to the West. Please take time to read these talks, your practice will benefit no matter what your Buddhist leanings may be.

Ajahn Chah’s teachings are simple, as is the Dhamma, there is no flourish, no garlands and no unnecessary complication. Ajahn Chah teaches the Dhamma as it is, and that is what makes his teachings so valuable. Simple, and to the point.

May all beings benefit from these discourses, and live free from fear.

Ajahn Chah

Ajahn Chah

This booklet is priceless. It contains quotes and anecdotes from the Venerable Ajahn Chah that really get to the ‘nitty gritty’ of the Dhamma. It is compiled by Dhamma Garden and following the wish of Ajahn Chah, is made freely available. It must not be sold for any reason whatsoever.

I cannot put into words any meaningful description of this booklet, so the best that I can do is to say… ‘Read It’!

Ajahn Chah’s words will lift you up and guide you on your path, far better than any description I might try to provide.

Theravada Monks

Theravada Monks

I have come across a thoroughly interesting eBook regarding what the life is like for a Thai Forest Monk. It is published by Wat Pa Nanachat Monastery celebrating their 25th Vassa. Wat Pa Nanachat was the first monastery in Thailand dedicated to providing Westerners the opportunity to learn the Thais Forest Tradition. The file contains articles and essays by various Bhikkhus and Ajahns on numerous subjects, and provides insight into what life is like for a Bhikkhu in North East Thailand. It also gives glimpses into to Ajahn Chah himself, and what it was like to be taught by him.

I hope you find this document interesting, as I have done. It is, as usual, for free distribution and available in the eLibrary, so please do share with anyone you may belive would benefit from its contents.

We’re persistent and constant, yet not rushed or hurried. Neither are we too slow.
